Psalm 17:8a — “Keep me as the apple of Your eye..." NKJV
We say it all the time — “You’re the apple of my eye,” but where does that even come from?
In ancient language, the “apple” referred to the pupil — the most delicate, guarded part of the eye. Think about how instinctively we protect our eyes. We blink. We shield them. We turn our heads from bright light. We wear protective glasses when something could cause harm. Our eyes are precious to us.
To be the apple of someone’s eye means you are treasured. Guarded. Kept constantly in their sight.
When David prays in Psalm 17:8, “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings,” he’s basically asking for tender, protective love.
We don’t have to beg for something that is already true. We are the apple of His eye.
As a mom, I understand this instantly. I can sit in a crowded set of bleachers and still know exactly which one is mine. If one of my kids comes home hurt or frustrated, they already know I’m fiercely protective. Sometimes they’ll say, “Mom, don’t do anything.” Other times it’s, “Mom, will you handle this?” They know they matter deeply to me. You don’t think the Lord feels that way about us?
He is not distant. He is not passive. He is fiercely protective and deeply affectionate toward His children.
Yesterday in Psalm 16:8, we talked about setting the Lord always before us — making Him our reference point for everything. Today feels like the other side of that same coin. When I keep Him at the forefront of my life, I begin to live from the security of being cherished.
This is why I’m so committed to daily alignment — one chapter a day, first thing in the morning. It anchors me and reinforces my identity in Christ. It helps me practice progress over perfection.
My prayer this week is simple: "Lord, keep me as the apple of Your eye AND help me see myself the way You see me."
If you haven’t read Psalm 17 yet, go read it first. Then come back and reflect. Reading the Word is powerful. Reading it in community makes it even sweeter. You don’t have to catch up. You just have to jump in.
