“When they had made an end of dividing the land as an inheritance according to their borders, the children of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua the son of Nun.” Joshua 19:49 NKJV

I thought, Why on earth would they think casting lots signified hearing from God? So I did a little digging. What seemed like a system of randomness to me was actually, for the Israelites, a sacred way of discerning God’s will—especially in decisions that required fairness and impartiality, like dividing land. It wasn’t random in their minds. It was a holy act, done in the presence of God, to reveal His choice. I was reminded of this in Proverbs as I studied: “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:33)

Easter meant so much more to me this year, especially being in the Old Testament like we are.

Jesus came, died, and rose again, He tore the veil. The Holy Spirit was given to us as believers—meaning we no longer need priests or lots to discern God’s will. Jesus even modeled this for us: teaching us how to listen to the Spirit, know the Father’s voice, and walk in relationship with Him.

What they longed for, we now have.

What a blessing.
