Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.” 2 Samuel 16:23 NIV
WHAT—“the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God”— it was this for me today!
Was David not inquiring of God anymore? Had he started relying more on Ahithophel than on the Lord? The verse doesn’t exactly say that David stopped communicating with God. It’s more about how highly people viewed Ahithophel’s wisdom—It was just not right. His counsel was so respected that it seemed like hearing straight from heaven. Except it wasn't the Lord. It was anything but... so when something hard or confusing happens, How many times I have caught

myself reaching for the phone instead of falling to my knees. I’ve done that more times than I’d like to admit.
I think it would be easy to say in those moments. I don’t trust God, but I think for me it’s more than out of habit unfortunately and because I want clarity, I want relief, I want someone who can speak into the moment right away. It's likely the person I trust most is the first one I run to. Sometimes that’s been girlfriends or perhaps a parent or a therapist. Lately starting to actually catch myself. The progress is actually encouraging. My time in the Word is so transforming.
This verse isn’t telling us to stop seeking wise counsel. There was a check in my spirit today to continue to lean in to how often I’m looking elsewhere before I look to the Lord. Who do I call first when things get hard? It's a great question.
I’m curious—can you imagine what would shift if we brought it to God before we brought it to others? Whew. That’s my heart’s desire
