What an unusual reading we have today friend. After all, who enjoys reading about bodily discharges and the intricate laws around them? This chapter literally spells out the regulations regarding bodily discharges and outlines how individuals can become "unclean." Everything about this chapter felt so silly and Irrelevant at first. However, what I realized as I read and prayed was what a powerful reminder of our shared human condition, unclean!
When considering the idea of being "unclean," many of us think of it only in a physical context. Leviticus urges us to think bigger: being unclean can also imply a serious spiritual state that affects our connection with God.
Today I became overwhelmed by the reality that no matter how hard we try to follow rules or perform rituals, we will inevitably fail to meet God's standards. I guess I can say, by default we are unclean. As I read more and more of Leviticus I am constantly reminded how desperately I need Jesus in my life.
In the Jewish tradition, these laws were not mere suggestions; they served as vital guides for maintaining holiness. They were meant to keep the community sanctified and highlight the distance between humanity and God. Each regulation served as a reminder of the importance of atonement and purity. In Romans 3:20, it is written that “through the law, we become conscious of our sin.” This awareness of our sinfulness highlights the necessity of redemption. Everything we are reading, all the rituals and ceremonies were essential. The Law was too. What a constant in our face reminder of something far greater: Jesus Christ. Under the New Covenant, we learn that Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. His sacrifice on the cross provides a lasting cleansing from our uncleanliness.

As I read through today I am reminded of the compassion I must also have toward others. In a world that often presses us to put on a perfect front, true cleanliness is born from vulnerability, humility, and an honest recognition of our need for Jesus.
Here is the good news for those of us in Christ. We are no longer defined by your uncleanliness; we are defined by the love and righteousness of Christ.
If you have never received Christ as your Lord & Savior, we can do it today. Reach out! Don't wait.
